Pet Easter Dangers

Updated: Nov 30, 2023

Easter is hopping up on us quickly which can mean more time with our families and friends indulging in some chocolatey treats or hot cross buns. Avoid the emergency room and enjoy Easter with your pup and kitty by being egg-tra cautious for peep’s sake.

Easter Eggs – Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to cats & dogs. The darker the chocolate the more concentrated it is. Even small amounts can lead to upset tummies, seizures, heart problems and possible death. Call your vet if you find your dog or cat has eaten any chocolate as they can work out the best course of action depending on the amount.

Hot Cross Buns – Hot cross buns can contain dried grapes in the form of raisins or sultanas. Grapes even in small quantities can cause fatal kidney failure in dogs & cats who ingest them. We are still not sure why this occurs, especially how some dogs seem to be able to ingest large quantities with no ill effects while others fall gravely ill after eating just a few.

Spring bulbs – Daffodils are poisonous to dogs if they eat the bulbs or flowers. The flower heads can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy. In severe cases, this may result in dehydration, tremors and convulsions. Tulips can cause tummy upsets and heart and respiratory problems.

Xylitol - Xylitol is an artificial sweetener used in home baking and found in many products including some sugar-free gums and human diet foods. It can also be found in some chocolate and other sweet treats around Easter time. Dogs & cats are extremely sensitive to xylitol and even small amounts can cause toxicity. Early symptoms of xylitol poisoning include lethargy, vomiting, loss of coordination, seizures and even death may occur.
