Keeping Your Pet Safe from SEQ’s Summer Heat and Sun

Writer's picture: Christopher MayellChristopher Mayell

Southeast Queensland’s summer can be intense, especially for our furry friends who don’t handle the heat as well as we do. Here are practical tips to keep your pet cool, safe, and sunburn-free this summer!

1. Stay Hydrated - Keeping pets hydrated is the first line of defence against heat stroke. Always have fresh, cool water available – at home and on outings. Adding ice cubes to their water bowl can be an easy way to keep the water cool longer, plus many pets find ice cubes fun to chase around!

  • DIY Treat Idea: Make pet-safe ice treats by freezing water with bits of kibble, low-sodium broth, or even a few blueberries.

2. Walk Early or Late - In hot weather, plan walks for the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler. And remember the 5-Second Rule: if you can’t comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for five seconds, it’s too hot for paws!

3. Sun Safety for Pets - Pets can get sunburned too, especially those with light-coloured or sparse coats. Protect sensitive areas (like the nose and ears) with pet-safe sunscreen, and encourage shaded play during the hottest part of the day.

  • Pro Tip: For dogs who love to sunbathe, create a shaded outdoor area or set up a pop-up canopy for safe outdoor time.

4. Be Mindful of Signs of Heat Stroke - Heat stroke in pets can escalate quickly. Look out for signs like excessive panting, drooling, rapid pulse, or disorientation. If you notice these symptoms, bring your pet indoors, offer cool (not cold) water, and contact your vet immediately.

With these simple strategies, your pet can stay cool, comfortable, and safe all summer. Share this post with friends to spread these pet-saving tips!
