You may have seen our post a few weeks ago about Canine Parvovirus🦠being a problem in Ipswich. It is still very prevalent and we are seeing an increase in the number of preventable cases.📈
As such, we have received lots of further questions🤔relating to this and canine yearly vaccinations so here are some answers to the most asked‼️
💉What is a C5 vaccine and what does it cover?
The C5 vaccination that dogs🐕receive provides protection against Canine Parvovirus, 2 strains of Canine Cough (more commonly known as Kennel Cough), Canine Distemper and Canine Hepatitis.
💉What is the difference between a C3 and a C5 vaccine?
A C3 vaccine covers the 3 core diseases; Canine Parvovirus, Canine Distemper and Canine Hepatitis.🧬
A C5 covers the 3 core diseases and 2 additional strains of Canine Cough (Bordetella Bronchisepta and Parainfluenza).😷
💉Is the Parvovirus vaccination or booster separate?
No. If your dog receives the recommended yearly C5 vaccine, Parvovirus is covered in this.
💉What is the schedule for canine vaccination?
Puppies must receive an initial course of 3 Vaccines a month apart; a C3, C5 and a C5.
The first vaccine is a C3 at 6-8 weeks of age, the second is a C5 at 10-12 weeks of age and the final is a C5 at 14-16 weeks of age.
Adult dogs that have received their puppy schedule should receive a yearly C5 booster to remain covered.🐶
If you have an adult or mature age dog👵🏻🧓🏼that hasn’t received a vaccine within the last few years, it is recommended they complete a course of 2 C5 boosters a month apart to bring them up to date. They should avoid public areas until 10-14 days after the second booster.🏞
💉Can my puppy go out in public after their final vaccination?
After a puppies final C5 it is recommended that owners wait 10-14 days before taking your puppy out.🌿This is to ensure your puppy has built up immunity to go outside safely.☀️
💉How much do Vaccinations cost?
On average a yearly C5 vaccine will cost $90-$100. In comparison, the expected cost for treatment of parvo is around $1500+ and has a high mortality rate in puppies.😯
💉Is there a cure for Parvovirus?
No there isn’t. Hospitalisation, supportive critical care and medications are administered over the course of a dogs illness to help treat the virus.
💉Can my dog recover from Parvovirus?
The short answer is yes, it is possible. The survival rate of dogs that receive immediate Veterinary care is about 68% - 98% as broad average. The euthanasia rate for dogs that do not receive immediate veterinary care is approximately 41%. Recovery times vary from case to case but can take anywhere from 1-2 weeks for a dog to completely recover and there is no guarantee. Even after recovery a dog will shed Parvo microbes for up to 14 days afterward.
💉Can I test my dogs level of immunity?
Yes! There are blood🩸tests known as Titre Tests that allow us to assess the level of immunity your dog has against Canine Parvovirus. Please contact our friendly staff for more information about this test.📞
